Sacrifice 03:14
I’m kicking it babe, I’m kicking it good I ain’t kicking out a thing like you thought I should I’m packing my bag, pitching my tent Ask anybody and they won’t tell you where I went Thinking it over baby Tell you what I’m gonna do Think you’re gonna sacrifice me, I’m gonna sacrifice you Like I was telling you babe in the wee small hours When a man’s at the height of his creative powers He don’t hang around waiting for bread to rise So I’m living on biscuits, and telling you babe, goodbye If you ever get to wondering if I’m gone for good Just take a look around the old neighborhood I can tell you a thing ‘bout everything you’re gonna see Every bush, every rock, every tree, ain’t none of ‘em me

Well Jukebox Jed was a small town boy And his own pride and joy Woulda had to be a tossup between two things His pistol and his rings He could drink moonshine till he was well blind Twenty-one years old Old Double-J could drink and fight And talk a blue streak all night But to him that small-town living Was a little dull Cuz he cared about his image And he cared about his role So one night in the fall he packed it all And headed round down in the cold night In a big old beast moving east And no one minded in the least Except his mama, who he didn’t even call And who still left on the light Old Jukebox rolled into three big towns And three times got knocked down By a bigger man, by a faster man And one time by some punks In the fourth town old Jed wrecked his car When he ran it into a pole So he robbed a store cuz he was broke And the cops put him in the poke He didn’t have a dime So Jukebox Jed got time And prison for Jed was a hard, hard road But he made it out on parole And he found him some work as a drugstore clerk Where they made him wear a long-sleeved shirt To hide the tattoos on his arm Old Jed picked up at the work farm And everybody thought they were better than him And Jed started drinking gin He got him a girl he liked to beat And lock out in the street And one day he went too far And he ended up back in a cop car “I guess that’s better,” thought Jed “Than being a girl in a six-foot hole.” And the federal judge just looked at Jed And scratched his ugly bald head He knew Jed was a bad man He could see it in his eyes So he put him away for ninety-nine years And Jed never shed a tear And when his mama saw Jed on the TV screen She called up her friend who said, “Oh, you mean “Your boy’s that one from up Kansas City “Why’d he kill that girl that was so pretty?” And Jed’s mama just started to cry And said she didn’t know why

I’ve been heartbroken Broke a few hearts too One thing that I’ve learned is Nothing makes a man so blue You know that you can’t love two, boys No it don’t work that way One will leave you in the morning The other will never be the same Sometimes feels like it’ll all work out And then suddenly comes that bitter end And you’ll be sitting there drinking Stuck down in Lostville once again I hope you hear me singing Brother I know how you feel Seems that we’ve all been that way before I’m sure we’ll be that way once again It’s better to have loved and lost that love Than to have never loved at all But when it’s all said and over There’s no one there to break your fall

So how you been, he says to me I ain’t doing so good myself as you can clearly see I’m getting stiff, I’m going blind Head done left my feet behind Oh, look at me now, and look at me then Could you tell what I was from the state I’m in Still wanna do the things I done before Trouble is, I just can’t do those things no more, me Oh my We’re all gonna die Can you tell me straight, can you tell me true You know I’ve always trusted you Tell me like a man, tell me like a friend Is anything left besides the end? Cuz I get up in the morning and I kick it on And I grumble and I fumble and I stumble along And I try not to break every time that I bend And I shake like an old dead tree in the wind, me Oh my We’re all gonna die Can’t say a thing, there ain’t a thing to say Look in his eyes, and I gotta look away I can’t believe it’s come at last The future’s gone, the past is past I’m wishing for you, may you run in the sun May you fly like the wind, may you never be done May you be the only thing you ever wanted to be I’ll wish it for you, wish it for me, me Oh my We’re all gonna die

Red Dress 03:44
Hey pretty baby where you going with that red dress on Hey pretty mama where you going with that red dress on Going out to have some fun now that her old man is gone Hey pretty mama where did you sleep last night Hey pretty mama where did you sleep last night I didn’t see you baby till the sun was shining bright Hey pretty mama what makes you so doggone mean Hey pretty baby what makes you so doggone mean If you’d be in her shoes you know you’d do the same darn thing Said hey pretty baby, whoa pretty mama Hey pretty baby, whoa pretty mama Where you going with that red dress on

Finger on my collar, another on my dollar Coming up on the right Nothing so fine as New York by night Hazy as a daisy, most to drive me crazy Slipping on back out of sight Nothing so fine as New York by night Well now it glows and glistens, but if it listens It don’t have much to say But that don’t stop me from talking anyway Moonlight on the water, shouldn’t but I oughta Promenade till broad daylight Nothing so fine as Whether in a five-star hotel, or in a Polish diner Nothing so fine as New York by night
7.
Babe I been good to you, I couldn’t be bad if I tried Yeah I been good to you, I couldn’t be bad if I tried So it ain’t my problem if you ain’t satisfied You need answers babe, answer’s just not mine to give You need answers babe, answer’s just not mine to give If I had ‘em and I held ‘em back I would not deserve to live Is anybody really gonna love you? Man, you’re gonna find out someday Is anybody ever really gonna love you, man you’re gonna find out someday One way or the other, just ain’t my place to say It’s just like the little man said, everybody must get stoned It’s just like the big man said, everybody must get stoned So leave the light on baby and I can find my own way home Babe I been good to you, I couldn’t be bad if I tried Yeah I been good to you, I couldn’t be bad if I tried So it ain’t my problem if you ain’t satisfied

Lonely Man 04:11
Call all the talk show hosts, the word’s out on the street First one who gets ahold of this, why, his ratings won’t be beat I’m ready to take it public, put the mic into my hand And I’ll tell the world that I’m a lonely man Call all the record stores, they’ll be clearing off the shelves Making way for the hottest thing since the King first gave ‘em hell Why, the whole world will stop and listen when I strike up the band And I tell the world that I’m a lonely man Lonely in the morning, lonely at night Lonely when things are falling apart and lonely when they’re all right Lonely as a jukebox rusting on the floor Wondering why nobody wants to hear them old songs no more Lonely in the morning, lonely at night Lonely when things are falling apart and lonely when they’re all right Lonely as a music box, rusting on the shelf Wishing my arms were long enough for me to open up myself Better call the President, tell him, ‘maximum alert’ If they handle this diplomatically I hope nobody gets hurt Why, the markets may bust, and the crops turn to dust, I’ll fix it all if I can But I gotta tell the world that I’m a lonely man Oh, I’ll tell ‘em all
10.
Hey Juliet 05:18
Hey Juliet Get out of bed How many times have I gotta tell you You’re worth nothing to me dead? Get up and smile Stand up and live I’ve done everything a man can do Advice is all I’ve left to give Cuz I am not your Romeo I am not your Romeo I don’t want to die for you And I want you living too I know it’s hard It’s hard for us all We’ve every one got wings to spread Sometimes we fly and sometimes we fall I’ll catch you if I can I’ll catch you if I’m there But if you hit the ground sometimes Don’t say it’s cuz I never cared I’m just your man And I ain’t your first Heaven knows I ain’t the best But you should know I ain’t the worst Hey Juliet Get out of bed Quit this talk about dying for love And just try and live your life instead

Time finds everything sometime I won’t rest till I find peace of mind And I’ll miss you while you’re gone Yeah I’ll miss you while you’re gone But I ain’t gonna grieve for long Tried your best to steal me, yeah you won I can’t complain, know I had my fun And I stayed out till the dawn And I stumbled already gone But I ain’t gonna grieve for long I got a parrot and he knows your name He tells time but it’s always the same And I taught him how to piss in the wind But he keeps coming back again Guess he never did grieve for long Time finds everything and drags it down Won’t be long till I come around And I’ll miss you while you’re gone And I’ll miss you while you’re gone But I ain’t gonna grieve for long
